Retail migration planning

Lightspeed to Shopify migration

Identify your Lightspeed edition, decide what is changing and choose the right route into Shopify.

Check my Lightspeed migration

A Lightspeed to Shopify migration can mean changing retail POS, replacing an ecommerce site, or doing both. Start by identifying the Lightspeed product you use. Retail editions have different exports and product identities; an ecommerce migration also introduces website and URL work that a retail data import does not cover.

POS Migrations by Sqquid offers a scoped retail data service for $2,999 USD. We review the included records and receiving method before booking. Full website rebuilding, POS setup and ongoing integrations need their own responsibilities.

If you are unsure, check your account or ask your Lightspeed administrator. Do not use an R Series template merely because another edition also carries the Lightspeed name.

What should move into Shopify?

The core review covers products, variants, identifiers, customer contacts and opening inventory at each agreed store. We also inspect the Shopify account before loading. If it already hosts the online catalog, the mapping needs to preserve the identities those listings use.

Historical receipts, gift cards, credit, loyalty and open orders are listed separately. Each needs a supported receiving method, a usable archive or an explicit exclusion. Being present in a Lightspeed export does not establish that a record can be recreated natively in Shopify.

Import tools and managed migration

Shopify’s Lightspeed migration guide describes CSV workflows and an early-access Store Migration app for eligible R Series and X Series stores. Confirm eligibility and current tool limits before choosing that method. The guide’s app restrictions do not describe every possible import workflow or establish S Series eligibility.

For a simple catalog, an available tool and careful retailer checks may be sufficient. A managed move is useful when you need help resolving matrix relationships, matching existing Shopify products, mapping locations or documenting exceptions. Read the comparison of free imports and managed migration before choosing.

Outsourcing a Lightspeed to Shopify migration

When you outsource the work, agree what the specialist must deliver. Ask for a field map, a representative test, counts of created and matched records, rejected-row handling and reconciliation by item and location. Decide who approves exceptions and who can stop the final transfer if an acceptance check fails.

Our confirmed scope identifies those outputs and the planned final snapshot. It also records vendor charges, access requirements and the launch milestone. We do not promise a fixed delivery time before reviewing your records, access and wider launch dependencies.

Test one product family before the full move

In a fictional example, a retailer has one style with three sellable variants and stock at two locations. The test should preserve the grouping and each full barcode, match any existing Shopify listing and reconcile six variant/location quantities. Counting three imported rows alone would miss an item placed at the wrong store.

Use the sample acceptance report to record expected results and exceptions. It contains fictional data, not evidence of a completed customer migration.

If the website is moving too

Assign ownership for page content, collections, images, redirects, domain changes, checkout and post-launch SEO checks. A 301 redirect map is a separate website work item. If the website stays in place, decide how its products and inventory will remain aligned with the new POS.

Check my Lightspeed migration and include the exact edition, whether POS or ecommerce is changing, store count and the required records. See pricing and scope before booking.

Good questions

Before you make the move.

Is Lightspeed Retail different from Lightspeed ecommerce?
Yes. Lightspeed Retail editions and Lightspeed ecommerce products are different sources. Identify the actual product and edition, then decide whether you are changing POS, the website or both.
Can I outsource the migration?
Yes, the agreed retail data preparation, mapping, test, transfer and reconciliation can be managed for you. The scope must still identify retailer approval, system access, exceptions and wider implementation owners.
Can I keep my existing Shopify catalog?
If Shopify already holds the online products, matching those existing variants is part of the planning. We agree which records may be created or updated before a production load.
Which records need a separate method or archive?
History, gift cards, credit, loyalty, open orders and unsupported relationships need separate assessment. They may require another method, a readable archive or an exclusion; catalog import alone does not establish support.
